<image:title>Myopia Control - Myopic/Short-sightedness</image:title>
<image:caption>Myopia occurs when the eye grows too long from front to back, causing light to come into focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it. In other words, the focus falls short, which is why the condition is also called "short-sightedness." Distant objects and your driving vision will be blurry if you have myopia, but you still will be able to see some nearby objects clearly. Myopia typically starts during childhood and can progress gradually or rapidly with age.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/607ec9cefaaf8a5d7fe42e46/1622724059021-8MI9C0DA07681A9J9K5H/Normal+Vision.png</image:loc>
<image:title>Myopia Control - Normal Vision</image:title>
<image:caption>Emmetropia (normal vision) is the state of vision in which a faraway object (at infinity) are in sharp focus with the crystalline lens in a neutral or relaxed state. The condition of the “normal eye” is achieved when the refractive power of the cornea and the axial length of the eye are balanced. This focuses light rays exactly on the retina, resulting in perfect vision. A human eye in a state of emmetropia requires no corrective lenses.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/607ec9cefaaf8a5d7fe42e46/1622725020562-58QAR43PEG619Q7WLCRQ/peripheral+blur.png</image:loc>
<image:title>Myopia Control - Peripheral blur</image:title>
<image:caption>As the eyes becoming more myopic, they grow longer in a process called axial elongation. The shape of the eye becomes less spherical and more elliptical. This means when wearing corrective spectacle lenses, whilst the central part of the eye will see the distant object clearly, our peripheral vision is subtly blurred. The retina seems to have the ability to sense the blurry peripheral image and drive even more axial elongation, making the eye more myopic.</image:caption>

<image:title>Myopia Control - How do we slow down myopia progression?</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s normal for myopia to progress, but if it progresses too rapidly then it becomes a health risk. As well as adopting better reading habit, vision corrections such as progressive lenses, multifocal contact lenses, and orthokeratology lenses are reported to have various effectiveness by reducing peripheral blur while keeping central vision clear.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Recent research out of Singapore shows Atropine is a very effective way of slowing down the progression of myopia. The graph on the left shows that without treatment, the average patient will progress by -1.40D in 2.5 years, but Atropine treatment (regardless of %) will delay that process. However different concentration will have different effect on pupil size and focus.</image:caption>

<image:title>Contact Lens - What is a contact lens?</image:title>
<image:caption>In short, a contact lens is a piece of breathable plastic that holds a miniaturised prescription in its centre. It comes in two form: soft & hard. Soft lenses take up the shape of the eyes and are more comfortable to use. Hard lenses allow deeper customisation thus is more often used for remodelling (e.g. orthokeratology) or rehabilitation (e.g. keratoconus).</image:caption>

<image:title>Children - 0 to 3 Years</image:title>
<image:caption>Between birth to 3 years of age, our focus is on checking milestones and disease detection. We look for congenital abnormalities such as cataracts, childhood glaucoma, strabismus and on very rare occasions, cancer. The list of visual developmental milestones is long but most of the skills are easily observable by community nurses, daycare teachers and indeed, the parents. 2 things within the list of developmental milestones an optometrist should check are prescription and tracking. Believe it or not, the infant actually has rather poor eyesight and a large variant of refractive errors. We need to make sure the refractive errors gradually decreases as age increases and that tracking and convergence are developed at the same time as other fine motor skills.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>Children - 4 to pre-school</image:title>
<image:caption>This is the age where your child will receive a proper vision screening either in kindergarten or pre-primary. Providing that the eyes were healthy when checked at a younger age, we want to check for visual acuity and for any latent prescription. Sub-standard visual acuity and latent prescription could result in poor focus which may lead to poor concentration at learning.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/607ec9cefaaf8a5d7fe42e46/1625144239570-2W1I5MQTGM4F7R6H4FEL/unsplash-image-U6cFrZEgX5k.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Children - Primary School</image:title>
<image:caption>Learning through the use of vision is much more intensified at this age, and most of the learning these days are done on digital devices. In primary school, we focus on myopia detection & management and focusing/convergence issues such as Convergence Insufficiency (which can sometimes be mistaken for learning difficulties). This is also a good age to teach the child good vision habit such as protecting the eyes against UV and regular breaks during reading.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/607ec9cefaaf8a5d7fe42e46/1625146424320-USI570L5TADOHWD7DKPV/unsplash-image-VJHb4QPBgV4.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Children - High School</image:title>
<image:caption>This is the age when seeing become more than just a pair of glasses. As kids become teenagers, their life opens up to more activities that place more demand on vision and eyes. Contact lenses are useful for sport (for obvious reason but most contact lenses also has UV inhibitors to reduce UV damage) and social events. Reading glasses for otherwise normal and healthy eyes may be required for someone that might be spending more than 12 hours a day in front of computers. The eyes may also be more prone to dryness and allergy with the use of skin medications.</image:caption>
